植物雜記 - 木紋之美 - 有關木紋(Wood Figure And Grain)的名詞解釋(Glossary) - Part II

前言：

　　經過上集的解說，看到了許多以往所不知道的木紋，簡直大開眼界，嘆為觀止。除此之外，做研究還能了解一些從未見過的植物，真是一舉兩得啊！也因此，這種研究探索的樂趣就是持續翻譯的動力了。請參見下集了解更多訊息！在整理完畢之後，我也會將這些木紋做些歸納，這樣就更能幫助大家了解木紋系統了。

嫁接線 - 出現在被嫁接的樹木。
‧ graft line - occurs in grafted trees
註：Youtube有很多植物嫁接的教學影片。切斷強種的根或莖來當砧木，移植弱生種到砧木上生長。如下圖，嫁接線將色澤分成兩塊，上方淺色為English Walnut（Juglans Regia），下方深色為Black Walnut（Juglans Nigra）。

Walnut - Graft Line

不規則紋理 - 是一種有點模糊的詞彙，用來解釋從普通直線紋理中明顯變化的紋理。
‧ irregular grain - a somewhat vague term, used when the grain varies significantly from normal straight grain

Bubinga - Irregular Grain

多節 - 包含多樣的樹節。
‧ knotty - contains multiple knots

Spruce - Knotty

馬蘇爾 - 一種出現在樺樹的獨有、奇特木紋型態。
‧ masur - a particular, odd, grain type that occurs in birch
註：有點像鳥眼紋。形成原因是因為區域纖維被一種昆蟲（Agromyzia carbonaria）攻擊

Birch - Masur

斑點 - 有各種形式的斑紋，包括：

1. 塊狀斑點 - 相當整齊排列的斑點。
2. 破損斑點 - 一樣是斑狀，但是是被避免使用的一種詞彙。因為有種直覺性的負面意含。
                       (誰會想買壞掉的東西？)
3. 斑駁狀 - 充滿未組織化的平行四邊形狀區域。
4. 刀鋒斑點 - 相當長，規律，而尖銳的斑點。
‧ mottle - various forms of mottle, including:
    ◦ block mottle - mottled with a fairly regular arrangement
    ◦ broken mottle - same as mottled but a term that seems to be avoided due to
                                a perceived negative connotation
                                (hey, who wants to buy something that's broken?)
    ◦ mottled - full of unorganized parallelogram-shaped sections
    ◦ razor mottle - fairly long, regular, very sharp mottles

花生殼 - 看起來像花生殼，而規律得像是兩顆花生仁同在一個殼裡。
‧ peanut shell - looks like peanut shells (the regular kind with two nuts in one shell)
註：出現在布賓加（Bubinga）和日本梣木（Tamo Ash）

Tomo Ash - Peanut Shell

鳥啄 - 這種木紋看起來像被鳥啄過，或可能像蟲的移動軌跡。
‧ pecky - looks like the wood has been pecked by a bird, or may look like worm tracks
註：形成原因是真菌導致的。扁柏（Cypress）與雪松（Cedar）較常見到。

多籽 - 看起來像是得了麻疹的木頭。
‧ pippy - looks like the wood has the measles
註：下圖即為像加了麻疹的紅豆杉（Yew）。其實跟鳥眼很相像。

花斑 - 像被雨滴打到的水坑。
‧ pomelle - like a puddle being hit by raindrops
註：出現在沙比力木與布賓加木。而酒窩、漣漪紋（Dimple Figure）與其同義。

Sapele - Pomelle

鱗狀、雲狀、褥狀、絎縫狀 - 看起來像是一堆在玻璃杯水裡的汽泡。
‧ quilted - looks like lots of air bubbles in water under glass
註：在楓木很常看到，因為該樹有交叉鎖狀生長的木質。

Maple - Quilted

列狀 - 如同條紋狀，字義上是指橫列狀，但不是緞帶條紋。
‧ roey - same as striped (roey literally means "having rows") but not ribbon striped
註：紫心木有此木紋。原網站附的圖實在很模
稜兩可，有點類虎紋的感覺。

Purpleheart - Roey

緞帶條紋 - 看起來像是平行的緞帶與木材紋理縱長的走向。
‧ ribbon stripe - looks like parallel ribbons running lengthwise (with the grain)
註：其實沙比力挺常見的。

Sapele - Ribbon Stripe

旋切狀 - 弦切造成的漩渦狀。
‧ rotary - swirly figure caused by rotary cutting
註：黑胡桃的網路閣 - 弦切木紋

Bubinga - Rotary

臘腸絎縫狀 - 有點瘦長、平行的絎縫狀，而這些絎縫看起來就像是管狀臘腸。
‧ sausage quilt - quilted with somewhat elongated, parallel, "quilts" that look like tube sausage
註：也就是鱗狀中再分類出的一種類型。

切裂 - 像被切裂開的外觀。
‧ spalted - figure caused by spalting
(註：Spalt = Split + Splinter，泛指被真菌、細菌、黴菌侵蝕的木紋。)

特種 - 一種應用在特種破布木的獨特類型外表詞彙。
‧ special - a term applied to a particular form of figure in etimoe

Etimoe - Special

條紋狀 - 有條紋的，如果規律，會叫做緞帶條紋，如果短或長度不均則叫做列狀條紋。
‧ striped - has stripes (if they are regular, it's usually called ribbon stripe and if they are short and/or of uneven length it's called roey)

India Rosewood - Striped

漩渦 - 緊貼的樹叉，弦切等等造成的漩渦狀。
‧ swirl - swirly figure caused by near-crotch, rotary cutting, etc.
註：swirly grain與波紋（wavy grain）同義。可在桃花心木、胡桃木、布賓加、非洲桃花心木（Sipo）看到。

Cocobolo - Swirl

虎紋 - 與曲紋同義，有時候也叫與提琴背紋同義。
‧ tiger - synonymous with curly and sometimes used as synonymous with fiddleback

Maple - Tiger

狂放、令人激賞的 - 一種用來形容極特別的糊模用詞。
‧ wild - vague term for extreme figure

Cocobolo - Wild Wood Grain

蟲蛀 - 被蟲刻蝕或有蟲洞所控制的外形。
‧ wormy - figure dominated by worm etchings or worm holes

後記：

一、看到一些形容真的很生動。像雨水擊中的水窪、得了麻疹的木頭，這樣一講腦袋就有大概的影像出現，真是有趣。

二、第一次用英文去查（Quilting）這種樣式。其實絎縫這種縫製法在衣服、被子、包包很常看見。只不過用翻譯字典看到被褥狀時，實在不太能聯想。畢竟自己在蓋的被子是平整面的啊。

三、在找破布木（Special Etimoe）時找到天然木皮圖鑑的試讀電子書。看來是必買的一本書。

四、查了一下魚鱗（Fish Scale），竟然還有個Fishtail oak。請見以下連結：
